    QUEEN'S BATON TO PASS THROUGH FIJI

    The baton carrying a message from Queen Elizabeth II for the athletes and officials at Melbourne Commonwealth Games will visit Fiji on January 4-7, 2006. A Queen's baton relay organizing committee has been formed to oversee the baton's schedule while in Fiji. An international media entourage will accompany the baton and will film its travels around Fiji.     VIJAY SINGH TO DESIGN GOLF COURSE IN FIJI

    World's number one golfer, Vijay Singh, will design an 18-hole golf course at Natadola Marine Resort, a 580 hectare (1,450 acre) integrated resort golf development on Fiji's Coral Coast.     FIJI TOURISM FORUM 2004

    The Fiji Tourism Forum is all set for July 22/23 at the Sheraton Fiji Resort. The 'Fiji Tourism is For All' being the theme for this year underlines the importance of this industry to Fiji's economy. Prominent figures in the industry and Government officials, which includes the Hon. Prime Minister as the keynote speaker, will be presenting on issues relevant for short to long term planning and development. This is the opportune time for industry members and stakeholders to be updated on these issues and to have your say.     REPORT ON THE AVALON AIR SHOW, AUSTRALIA - FEBRUARY 2003

    Avalon Air Show 2003 The 2003 Avalon International Airshow is over for yet another two years. The event saw a variety of aircraft from all over the globe, which came together, in order to celebrate the centenary of sustained powered flight.

    Avalon saw many businesses and organisations across Australia and the world come together to showcase their products and services to prospective buyers in other parts of the aviation industry.

    Along with these trade days, there were three days open to the public, in which acrobatic aerial maneuvers were shown to the crowds below. It featured many aircraft, including a replica of the Wright Flyer to today's current Jet aircraft.

    The show attracted approximately 250 000 people, including families and enthusiasts who were given a show which they will never forget.

    AVALON AIR SHOW, AUSTRALIA - FEBRUARY 2003

    2003 marks the centenary of powered flight. The Avalon Airshow will embrace the aviation centenary and be a spectacular display, encompassing the first 100 years of powered flight. There will be celebrations and tributes to the pioneers of aviation during the entire week. The Airshow will take a step back in time and feature unique War-birds including a replica of the Wright Flyer, through to today's supersonic jet aircraft.

    DATES: Tuesday 11th February - Sunday 16th February. Trade Days 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th. Open to Public 14th 2:00pm-11pm, 15th, 16th.

    LOCATION: Avalon, Australia.

    TRAVEL CAFÉ TO FILM FIJI

    A film crew from the popular Southern California television travel show Travel Café will be in Fiji in December. They will produce two shows, one on soft adventure and another on the people and culture of Fiji.     2002 FIJI TOURISM FORUM

    For the first time ever, the Fiji Tourism Forum will be held in the North, at Namale Resort, Savusavu on November 29th and 30th. The theme is "Towards a Billion Dollar Industry".     SAMOAN TOURISM STRATEGY UNDER REVIEW

    Airports, wharves and roads to bring visitors to Northland will come under the spotlight in a $40,000 review of the region's tourism strategy. The new strategy will chart a course for the development of Northland's $500-million-a-year tourism industry until 2008. Destination Northland chief executive Brian Roberts said key focuses would include air services, marine services, tourism product development, Maori and cultural heritage development, eco- tourism, and tourism-related investment. The review will update a 1996 strategy that has seen the introduction of branding and marketing, the promotion of the Twin Coast Highway, and new investment including the Kauri Cliffs golf course and lodge. Industry New Zealand is contributing $25,000 to the review, which will be undertaken in consultation with industry participants, government agencies and local government.

    FVB AUSTRALIAN ROADSHOW SET FOR SEPT/OCT 2002

    The Fiji Visitors Bureau Australian Roadshow will be held from September 30 through October 10 and will include Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, Newcastle, Canberra, Melbourne and Hobart.     FIJI TO HOST ACP SUMMIT

    Fiji will host leaders of African Carribean and Pacific (ACP) states for their third summit in July. The summit to be held in Nadi will be attended by 78 Heads of ACP States, a number of non-ACP member countries together with several international non-governmental organizations. It is expected to be the largest international summit in Fiji since a Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in 1978.

    REGIONAL SEMINAR ON ECOTOURISM DEVELOPMENT - October 2001

    An intensive 2 day regional seminar on Sustainable Development of Ecotourism in Pacific Island Countries (PIC) was held in Suva last week, 17th to 18th October. Fiji's Minister for Tourism and Transport, Hon. Konisi Yabaki opened the Seminar. Forty-six delegates from eleven countries discussed key issues during three technical sessions: Sustainable Tourism Development, Country Perspective on Ecotourism, Major Issues on Sustainable Development of Ecotourism in the Pacific Region. Presentations within these technical sessions focused on specific issues relevant to the sustainable development of ecotourism in the region. Presentations included country reports on ecotourism development in PIC as well as reports on development of ecotourism in selected Asian countries. Also included in the programme was a group discussion on the establishment of a Pacific Ecotouism Association. The Seminar was funded by ESCAP and co-ordinated by SPTO.

    ECOTOURISM CONFERENCE - APRIL 2002

    The World Tourism Organisation is hosting a conference on the International Year of Ecotourism during April 2002. This is one of only a few conferences to be held leading up to a global conference on ecotourism in Canada. The purpose of this conference is to pull issues from the region relating to ecotourism development. Representatives from all across the South Pacific region will be present.

    The Fiji Ecotourism Association [FETA] in cooperation with our members and other stakeholders within Fiji is designing certification standards and guidelines in order to support quality in ecotourism nationwide. As a part of the ecotourism certification program there will be marketing opportunities for your operation, including representation on Fiji Visitors Bureau website, and the development of a marketing booklet of registered ecotourism operations to be distributed to travel agents selling Ecotourism.

    FETA is a non-profit organization formed in 1995 with the object of consolidating the energies of all who have an interest in ecotourism, including ecological, cultural, historical, nature-based and adventure tourism activities.

    FETA has a diverse membership that includes key industry sectors such as ecotourism accommodation, main stream hoteliers, tour operators; tourism planners; protected area managers, academics and students. For further inquiries email: FIJI ECOTOURISM ASSOCIATION

    RESTRUCTURE OF SOLOMON ISLANDS VISITORS BUREAU

    The SIVB has undertaken a major restructuring exercise in mid July. A new organisation structure was approved by the Board and implemented in mid July. The restructuring resulted in the amalgamation of some positions, abolition of some, and the creation of new positions. Under the reorganisation, 3 positions were affected and respective staff were made redundant. They are Robert Aunama and Augustine Fox.

    It is the intention of the SIVB management to review the structure and reorganise the Bureau to become more cost effective and efficient. A new section was created for market research and statistics. With the creation of this section, the Bureau hopes to provide up to date information and data for decision-making purposes. Under the new structure the SIVB currently employs 12 staff.

    SOUTHERN CROSS CABLE LAUNCHED IN FIJI

    Fiji now has the same communication capabilities as the United States, New Zealand, and Australia with the recent introduction of the Southern Cross Cable into the country.

    The optical fibre cable can deliver 120 gigabits per second of fully protected capacity capable of transmitting two full length movies between the United States and New Zealand every second.

    It is expected to open up new business opportunities in Fiji including offshore data processing centres.

    NEW INVESTMENT PACKAGE SET TO ATTRACT MORE BUSINESS

    The Interim Cabinet has given the Ministry of Finance and National Planning guidelines to prepare an investment package. Features that are expected to be included in the new package are:
  • Lowering of corporate tax rate for all taxpayers to be regionally competitive
  • Exempting distributed dividends from any further withholding or income tax to ensure that income tax is taxed once only
  • Investment allowances and accelerated depreciation to allow for more targeted support for sectors and regions
  • Structural review of fiscal duty rates
  • Lowering production input duty
