OUTRIGGER REEF FIJI – BIG HIT WITH CONFERENCES

Outrigger Reef Fiji will host the Bula Fiji Tourism Exchange (BFTE) from May 16 to May 19. As one of the most important events on Fiji’s tourism calendar BFTE is expected to welcome in excess of four hundred delegates.

In late February the Outrigger will welcome a KPMG annual retreat; and in March it will host a Colgate Palmolive conference; a Hotels and Tourism Industry seminar, and a Fiji Computer Society conference with 120 participants.

It has scheduled a Hibiscus Fun in the Sun Australian travel agent incentive in August, and a Commonwealth CBCA conference in October.

Robert McConnell, General Manager of the Outrigger, said that as the first major tourism resort development project completed in Fiji in the past fourteen years, it is heartening to be recognised as among the top choices for MICE business in the country. The optical fibre cable can deliver 120 gigabits per second of fully protected capacity capable of transmitting two full length movies between the United States and New Zealand every second.

It is expected to open up new business opportunities in Fiji including offshore data processing centres.

3rd South Pacific Tourism Conference 3 – 5 September 2001 Vanuatu The theme for the 3rd South Pacific Tourism Conference (SPTO) in Vanuatu is “South Pacific Wake Up Call!”. The theme echoes the resounding need for the tourism industry members in the region to be aware of the frailties that exist in our environment, cultures and social structures, and that the onus is on everyone to protect these fragile and valuable assets.

Topics will range from Marketing using the Internet, E-commerce, Tourism and the Environment, and more. There will also be an opportunity for the SPTO members and participants to discuss in an open forum, concerns and issues relating to SPTO and its effectiveness in providing the needed services to its members.

The heart of the discussions will take place during the breakout sessions, which will be in smaller groups, providing the participants opportunities to network with their counterparts and the facilitators on issues that really matter to their businesses.

Participants at the conference are expected from within the region in both the public and private sectors, and tourism partners in the source markets.

Registration fee will be FJD395.00 for SPTO members, and FJD550 for non-members.

Complete details and registration form will be available in the new SPTO website that will be online in early March 2001.
